This chapter examines the use of archival research and document analysis in critical security studies. These research methods are usually associated with the discipline of history but they have also been an important set of tools for critical social scientists. As a case study we will examine an event that took place approximately a century ago, the World War I internment of Ukrainians from the Austro-Hungarian Empire who made their home in Canada prior to 1914. In particular, the chapter includes discussions of how to analyze primary sources, the relationship between archive research and historical narrative, the proper development of deductive and inductive modes of reasoning, and their use in the creation of inferences about the past.
