Abstract

The paper reviews the major forces that have shaped the evolution of minimum wages in Greece. It starts by providing the institutional details regarding minimum-wage fixing and coverage, and proceeds to examine the macroeconomic developments which have shaped the evolution of both the level and the relative value of the minimum wage. It includes two case studies; the first one is based on interviews with representatives of the social partners, while the second one deals with the influence of the minimum wage on the regional distribution of gender-related and age-related unemployment rates.
