Since 2008 approximately half of the states in the U.S. have enacted one or more statutes for the formation of hybrid forms of business organization. The “hybrid” nature of such organizations refers to ground rules in the enabling statutes that blend aspects of traditional for-profit ventures (such as private investors) with characteristics normally associated with traditional non-profit entities (such as charitable or other social benefit purposes). Emerging right along with these forms are numerous questions from across a spectrum of the theoretical and academic to the practical, legal, and regulatory.
