Several investigations have identified the relationship between income inequality and authoritarianism through different methodologies. However, this relationship has not been studied in detail over time. In this study, I investigate the relationship between income inequality and authoritarianism, including its subcomponents over time. The Gini and Democracy Indices are negatively correlated and this correlation decreases from 2006/7 and 2014/15 (-0.27 to -0.18 respectively). Among the subcomponents of the Democracy Index, the strongest correlations with the Gini Index were between the Political Participation Score (-0.35 to -0.45) and the Political Culture Score (-0.49 to -0.33), while Pluralism has almost no correlation (-0.09 to -0.02) with the Gini Index. The other subcomponents of the Democracy Index have a modest correlation with the Gini Index. These findings suggest that the relationship between income inequality and authoritarianism is driven by Political Participation and Political Culture.
