Abstract

We update the Wood (2016) survey that gathered perceptions of accounting academics regarding
the review and publication process to measure how perceptions have changed over the last five
years. We find that academics generally perceive the overall process has not improved or has
become worse since 2016. More specifically, we find that respondents think acceptance rates in
elite journals should nearly double. Respondents believe reviewers focus too much on
incremental contribution, rigor and method and that reviewers and editors give too little
consideration for research that contributes to practice. Respondents believe that their institutions
focus too much on publishing in top journals and that top journals are biased in that they give
well-known researchers preferential treatment and favor certain topic areas and methodologies.
The perceptions are largely the same across editors, reviewers, and the topic area and university
ranking of respondents.
